The latest episode of The Health and Wealth Power Hour featured a remarkable conversation with Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez, who presides over the Family Violence Court in Bexar County, Texas. In this enlightening interview, Judge Gonzalez unveiled the groundbreaking program known as “Reflejo Court,” (Reflection Court) a trailblazing initiative aimed at rehabilitation and breaking the cycle of violence by addressing its underlying causes.

Judge Gonzalez’s distinguished career spans both social work and law. Prior to her role on the bench, she worked tirelessly as a lawyer, representing underserved populations. Her unique background grants her an invaluable perspective on dealing with trauma and creating opportunities for transformative change in individuals’ lives.

One of the pivotal issues Judge Gonzalez underscored is the inadequacy of conventional batterer intervention programs mandated by courts. These programs often fall short in addressing past trauma, a fundamental driver of violent behavior. Reflection Court sets itself apart by integrating trauma-informed care and equipping individuals with the tools needed for healing. Notably, the program boasts a remarkable zero recidivism rate among its graduates, underscoring the effectiveness of this innovative approach. As Judge Gonzalez eloquently puts it, “Redemption through accountability” is the program’s guiding motto. While it demands rigorous commitment, it also offers a ray of hope.

Participants in Reflection Court embark on a journey of 1-2 years, involving intensive counseling, therapy, substance abuse treatment if necessary, and probation. The primary objective is to break the cycle of violence by intervening early, often after the first offense, and affording individuals an opportunity to redirect the trajectory of their lives. It is not uncommon for families to fervently plead for their loved ones to receive the help they desperately need through these specialized courts.

Judge Gonzalez faces the grim reality of dealing with violent offenders head-on, including the threats and challenges that come with it. Yet, she remains steadfastly motivated by compassion and a vision of fostering a safer, healthier community. Her unwavering courage and innovative spirit serve as a wellspring of inspiration for all.

The story of Reflection Court is just one illuminating example of specialized courts across the nation striving for restorative justice and positive solutions. By delving deep into the roots of problems, we begin to heal.
